1949 Roger Lee Remodel. Montclair District, Oakland, CA.
Partial interior remodel of a Roger Lee home in the Montclair neighborhood of Oakland, CA. Mr Lee was the first Asian American architect of the AIA, he designed numerous iconic homes around the Bay Area.
The home offers sweeping views of the San Francisco Bay with the city and the Golden Gate Bridge framed perfectly from the living room windows.
Our mission was to update the function and design in a manner that felt cohesive with the rest of the home and without distracting from the iconic nature and history of the home. With the original areas featuring rough sawn redwood siding in a warm taupe, we designed all the casework in a matching glaze to marry back to the old. To add warmth we designed the custom made bedroom pieces in walnut to balance off the gray. In keeping with the home, we also glazed the ceiling in the same color. Radiant heated floors were added beneath a new blueish limestone. We added casework inspired by Japanese Tansu design to gain access to the roofdeck with a leather wrapped grab bar as a beautiful and functional safety accessory.
